For some travelers, “twin toddlers” may rank with stormy weather and security lines as all-time travel deterrents. But Holly, a member since 2010 and mother to 3-year-old twin boys, is here to assure you that traveling with small kids is nothing to fear. In fact, she and her husband, Bob, have elevated toddler travel to an art form.
Their sons, Carter and Tucker, are already veteran travelers. Starting when the boys were 9 months old, the whole family has traveled from their home in Atherton, CA, to destinations in the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe, with no plans to slow down any time soon.
“We’ve become a well-oiled machine when it comes to traveling with toddlers, whether it’s a day trip, weekend trip or one to two weeks away,” Holly says.
How do they do it? As with anything, practice helps. But if you’re contemplating a trip with your small kiddos, here are some of Holly’s “must haves” that she swears by:
Snacks and water Travel can be so unpredictable—we always bring portable, non-spoiling snacks and have water on hand wherever we go. The boys love Annie’s Homegrown Cheddar Bunnies and Bunny Fruit Snacks, which come in individual packs. We also take yogurt raisins and Multi-Grain Cheerios.
Cozy pullover or jacket for the plane/car/boat/train It can get cold and uncomfortable during transport, whether you’re in a plane, car, boat or train, so having a cozy pullover for the kids to wear or having a jacket that you can roll up and use as a pillow can be a lifesaver.
Extra set of clothes to carry on “Kids simply get messy, whether it’s on purpose or by accident, so having an extra set of clothes on hand that’s not packed in a suitcase will help tremendously—especially if one of them easily gets motion sickness.
Traveling with toddlers is always an adventure—don’t forget to pack your Zen outlook—but these little tips can go a long way toward making travel to any destination more fun for the whole family.
